Haynes Game 5: The Awakening
Haynes Game 5: The Awakening is an adventure-horror roleplay about five groups with diametrically opposing goals and how they work with and against each other with the fate of the world at stake.
Blurb
The sleepy hamlet of Last Hope, Massachusetts is as decrepit as it is isolated, home to less than a dozen stubborn holdouts after the town's mine ran dry and those with sense moved on to greener pastures. On the surface, it is nothing more than a dying relic, a forgotten memento of the past destined to become a ghost town. Below the surface, however, there is more to Last Hope than meets the eye.
Something begins to stir beneath the surface of the town, sending tremors snaking through the area. Something ancient, something hungry. These rumblings have not gone unnoticed by those who see beyond the veil of normalcy into the supernatural.
An eclectic band of strangers descend on Last Hope and the ancient denizen buried within. Some wish to destroy it, vanquishing a terror more primordial than the Earth itself; some wish to command it, taking its immense power for themselves; and some wish to release it, ushering in a new era of chaos and terror the likes of which the world has never seen. The fate of the human race rests on the actions of the ten conflicting souls entering the town.
There are no heroes in this group, no white knights riding in to save the day. Ten deeply flawed individuals, each with motivations and goals darker than the last. Which one of these shades of gray will be able to rise above the rest and see their dark machinations through, altering the course of destiny itself?
Background
This game takes place in the Cthulu Mythos, so will feature staples of the genre such as cults, rituals, ancient monsters, and the like. Having some knowledge of Lovecraft is not required, but an interest in the genre or work will help you get more enjoyment out of the game.
Despite the horror-focused source material, my goal is to make this story more of an action-adventure game rather than strict spookiness. Characters will die, horrible decisions will need to be made and there will be conflict with eldritch horrors, but no one will be paralyzed with fear or have their mind break from seeing a cosmic terror. You all will have the means and willpower to fight back.
In this game, you will each be working closely with a partner as well; another player whose goals match yours. I'll be upfront about this: there are no secret traitors or backstabbers among the players written into the game, you can trust your partner, and working closely with them will be essential to winning the game.
